Sitia is known historically to have been built on an ancient Minoan settlement. Excavations conducted 2 km southeast of the town of Petras have unearthed burial grounds of a necropolis and architectural remains of an ancient Minoan Palace that dates back to 2800 BC. According to findings recovered at the archeological site, Petras is believed to have been a thriving ancient city with a large port that served as a gate to eastern Europe that imported and exported raw materials to and from Syria and Egypt. The Minoan Palace in Petras at that time was the administrative, commercial and religious center of the ancient city as clay tablets and seal impressions used to seal papyrus roles were uncovered at the site. The actual size of the palace cannot be determined as the whole southern section was completely destroyed, the remaining portion that still stands today measures 2,500 sq/m. As for the necropolis, 26 funeral buildings ranging from 45 to 150 sq/m along with 5 burial pits have been excavated so far and are said to have belonged to the elite family members that resided in the palace. The ancient cemetery found on the archeological site of Petras has proven to be the largest burial grounds unearthed in Crete. Further archeological sites have also been recovered throughout the region of Sitia including Itanos, Mochlos, and Zakros. Sitia prospered throughout the Classical, Hellenistic, Byzantine, and Venetian periods as one of the island's major port cities. The town of Sitia was also destroyed and reconstructed many times, in 1508 from an earthquake, in 1538 by the pirate Barbarossa raids, and in 1651 by the Venetians so it will not fall into the hands of the Ottomans during their occupation. For over 200 years Sitia ceased to be an inhabited town until 1870 when a new town was built. Despite the trials and tribulations of the past Sitia has been able to overcome it all and become a popular destination in Crete that everyone wants to visit.

Take a walk along the palm tree-lined promenade that ends up at the well-organized Sitia Beach featuring soft gold sand, shallow crystalline sea waters, and many watersport activities that can be enjoyed by everyone. Explore the 13th-century Venetian fortress also known as Kazarma perched high above the town and harbor, which now functions as an open-air theater while providing stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area. Visit the Archeological Museum of Sitia which exhibits findings unearthed from the ancient cities in eastern Crete as well as artifacts excavated from the Minoan Palace found in Zakros. One of the most important exhibits on display is the Kouros, a male statue made of gold and ivory excavated from the ancient Minoan town close to Paleokastro in Sitia. Also, visit the Roman Fish Tanks, remains often semicircular constructions found along the shore where the Romans kept their fresh fish, and the Sitia Deposits, cavities in the ground where the people in antiquity placed their offerings to the Gods. Continue your journey beyond the town into the region with your Sitia rental car and visit one of the most significant monasteries in Crete that was built in the 15th century Iera Moni Toplou that is also considered a beacon of Orthodoxy. Explore the adventurous Richtis Gorge, offering hiking trails surrounded by a lush landscape that also features a crystalline river that pours out of a 20-meter-high waterfall forming a small pond beneath it. An ideal location to take a swim and soak up the tranquil atmosphere. Be sure to also visit the archeological sites of the excavated ancient cities found scattered across the region including the "Ravine of the Dead" in Zakros. The seas of Sitia are also garlanded with many beautiful islands most of which are environmentally protected areas including the Dionysades Islands which are home to rare and endangered floral and animal species as well as a sanctuary to the falcon known as Falco Eleonorae. Unfortunately, access is denied to the islands as they have been uninhabited for centuries but were once a place of worship to the ancient God Dionysus. Experience all that and so much more as you discover, explore and visit the charming town and a region full of attractions with your car rental in Sitia Crete. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!
