Along with many areas across the island of Crete, historical and archeological sites have been found and Sissi is no exception. Recent excavations on Kephali Hill located in Sissi have unearthed the remains of many structures along with artifacts that date back from 2600 to 1200 BC proving the existence of an ancient Minoan settlement. At the foot of the Kephali Hill that borders the shores of the sea, archeologists have discovered a cemetery with house-like tombs made of stone that contained skeleton bones and treasures that were buried with them. Close to the burial grounds remains of a fortification wall were also discovered confirming that the walls were built in order to protect their settlement. Further inland a monumental court-centered complex with buildings and palatial houses was also unearthed. It is believed that this is where the inhabitants of the ancient Minoan settlement socially gathered. Excavations on Kephali Hill and the surrounding area continue to this day with the hope of discovering further findings that will reveal more about this ancient settlement that suffered at the hands of natural disasters. Furthermore, the village and harbor of Sissi also played a pivotal role in Cretan history. During the Cretan revolution, the small port of Sissi which was well hidden in the rugged peninsula of the natural bay became the location where guns and ammunition were offloaded to arm the Cretan rebels of the Lassithi region in their attempts to free the island from the Ottoman Rule.

Although Sissi may be a small tourist resort in Crete it does not fall short on the amenities and facilities that it offers to its guests. There are plenty of hotels, studios, and apartments available in Sissi as well as a campsite 500m west of the harbor that also includes a swimming pool. In the village old buildings decorated with colorful doors and traditional whitewashed houses decked with bougainvillea trees in full bloom line the cobblestone streets that lead to a wide assortment of shops selling handmade crafts, homemade Cretan products, and souvenirs. Once the village ends then the beautiful natural harbor of Sissi begins. A unique harbor that almost resembles a river with green calm waters that slowly drift into the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. At the harbor, colorful fishing boats line the quay as the fisherman collect their daily catch. Several renowned seafood and fish taverns dot the waterfront as the village of Sissi is also famed for its delicious cuisine and its fresh fish prepared by excellent chefs. There are also several boats that offer daily excursions to the surrounding villages and secluded beaches as well as a glass-bottom boat for underwater viewing of the beautiful corals and sea life. To the west of the harbor, a lovely lush garden ringed with palm trees, ponds, and colorful flowers can be found. To the east along the coast two pristine beaches Boufos and Avlaki. Just 5 km away nestled between the rugged rocks of a gorge, the Monastery of Saint George of Selinari that also includes a 16th-century church. A very popular location among tourists and devout worshippers of the Greek Orthodox faith with claims that the icon found in the church has performed miracles by healing the sick and weak. Also, visit the neighboring charming village of Vrahassi and the beautiful village of Epano Sissi which also offers a stunning scenic view of the mountains and the sea below. If it is an adventure that you seek then head out to Malia 6km west of Sissi and explore the archeological site of an ancient Minoan Palace or the mysterious cave found in Milatos located 7km east of Sissi.
