Agia Galini as we know it today is built on the ancient site Syvritos, a Minoan city, and harbor that flourished during the Late Minoan period. From antiquity, Agia Galini was also called Soulia, a place of worship with a great temple that was dedicated to the goddess Artemis. Archeological excavations in the area have discovered remains of this ancient city including ruins of a temple, buildings, tombs, marble statues and granite columns some of which can still be seen today, while others have been moved to the museum. The name Agia Galini means "Saint Serenity" that according to legend was given by a Byzantine princess named Eudocia that journeyed by ship in exile to Africa. Along the way the ship got caught in a big storm, the princess prayed to the Virgin Mary, begging for help during this difficult time and vowed to build a temple in her honor when saved. The ship managed to approach the calm sheltered bay of the village and the faithful princess built the temple as promised and named it Panagia Galini. The church of Agia Galini still exists today surrounded by the village’s cemetery that can be easily visited with your Agia Galini Car Rental.
